for some reason.

Molly MacKenzie is an author, educator, costume designer, and occasional world traveler. She was born on a farm in Wisconsin, but currently lives in North Carolina with her cat Bungo. The last time she was in Hungary, she ordered a veggie burger at a diner and received a square of fried cheese on a bun. This is the best thing that has ever happened to her.

  • So why Vienna?
When I was a teenager I read Eva Ibbotson's YA romances from the 80s-90s and got mildly addicted. Eva was born in Vienna and fled during World War II, and set most of her YA books in Austria; and frankly, they're lovely.

This fondness for Vienna was compounded when I went there in 2016 and ate spinach strudel for pretty much every meal. Ah, memories.

  • Where do you get your inspiration?
    Musicals, mainly.

  • When did you start writing?
When I was about eleven I made up an original character in the 1960s Star Trek universe, because I used to watch that show all the time with my parents. My character's name was Kelly Strong and she was some kind of brilliant computer expert/anthropologist and she and Captain Kirk fought all the time but they loved each other really.

Anyway, I think that's how it started.

  • How many countries have you been to?
17 at last count. Best ones so far: Austria, Slovenia, Mongolia, Taiwan.

  • The big question: Why don't you write British historical romances like a normal person?
Okay, so no one's ever asked me that exactly. Also, it should be noted that I love British historicals; I enjoy Jane Austen as much as anyone!
    However.
There are almost 200 countries in the world, but in historical romances, we usually only get to see one or two. Regency England is beautiful and glamorous, and the American West is exciting and adventurous, but I've been there before. Occasionally, I'd like to travel somewhere else in my reading. And I don't think I'm alone.
Thus, I don't write traditional British historical romances. I sure as heck read them, but I don't write them.
    Because my passion lies elsewhere.
That's really all there is to it.
